PinPointe FootLaser receives FDA clearance for treatment of nail fungus

The podiatry practice of Mark E. Spier, DPM, announced today that the PinPointe™ FootLaser™ has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of nail fungus (onychomycosis). Dr. Spier is the first certified provider of the treatment in the Baltimore area.

Purdue and Mundipharma assume worldwide development for Infinity's fatty acid amide hydrolase program

Infinity Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that Purdue Pharmaceutical Products L.P. and its independent associated company, Mundipharma International Corporation Ltd., have exercised their right to assume worldwide development and commercialization activities for Infinity's fatty acid amide hydrolase, or FAAH, program. The decision reflects progress made in the development of Infinity's oral FAAH inhibitor, IPI-940.

Admissions for medication, drug-related conditions increase by 117% among Americans aged 45 and older

The number of hospital admissions among Americans ages 45 and older for medication and drug-related conditions doubled between 1997 and 2008, according to a new report released today by HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Medication and drug-related conditions include effects of both prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as illicit drugs.

Salk discovers potential new target for MS

Scientists are closer to solving one of the many mysteries of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, thanks to a recent study conducted at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The research revealed a previously unknown connection between two ion channels, which, when misaligned, can cause the many bizarre symptoms that characterize the condition.

Sanofi Pasteur presents Fluzone quadrivalent Phase II trial data for influenza at IDSA Annual Meeting

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group announced today the results of a clinical trial of its investigational Fluzone Quadrivalent (Influenza Virus Vaccine) compared to the currently licensed Fluzone (Influenza Virus Vaccine). Data from the Phase II trial assessing the immunogenicity and safety of the investigational quadrivalent vaccine were presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A team of physicians and scientists from the Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute and Department of Surgery, led by Dan Gazit, DMD, PhD has been awarded a three-year $1.9 million grant from the California stem cell agency to fund research leading to clinical trials for what could become the first biological treatment for the most common type of bone fracture in osteoporosis patients.

While this statistic includes abuse of both legal and illegal drugs, Quest Diagnostics, a diagnostic testing company, reported the use of prescription opiates by American workers and job applicants has increased by 40% since 2005.

Research suggests lowering cholesterol can reduce benign prostatic hyperplasia

A cholesterol-lowering drug reduced the enlarged prostates of hamsters to the same extent as a drug commonly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), report researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and their colleagues in the October issue of the Journal of Urology. Together, the drugs worked even better.

Novartis releases study results on oral calcitonin for treatment of osteoarthritis: Unigene Laboratories

Unigene Laboratories, Inc. announced today that Novartis has released information on the first of two studies on oral calcitonin for the treatment of osteoarthritis conducted by its license partner Nordic Bioscience. The recently completed Study 2301, which assesses the safety and efficacy of oral calcitonin in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, had three co-primary endpoints.

Health Canada approves ULORIC to lower serum uric acid levels in patients with gout

Takeda Canada, Inc. is pleased to announce that ULORIC® (febuxostat), an innovative oral urate-lowering therapy to lower serum uric acid levels in patients with gout is now available in Canada. This medication is the first new treatment option in more than 40 years for the approximately three per cent of Canadians who have hyperuricemia associated with gout.1 ULORIC was discovered by Teijin Pharma Limited of Tokyo and licensed to Takeda for the Canada market.
