2009 was an eventful year, with a mixture of successes and breakthroughs, but also with some challenges which required that measures be taken during the autumn. Our mature clinics continued to develop well during the year, as did most of our newly started clinics. 2009 was therefore the first time that we achieved a positive whole-year result before close-down costs in England, despite increasing development and start-up costs for the Group as a whole.

Fetuses exposed to high levels of stress hormone may have solving problems later on: Study

A mother's nurture may provide powerful protection against risks her baby faces in the womb, according to a new article published online today in the journal Biological Psychiatry. The research shows that fetuses exposed to high levels of stress hormone - shown to be a harbinger for babies' poor cognitive development - can escape this fate if their mothers provide them sensitive care during infancy and toddler-hood.

Resverlogix commences enrollment in RVX-208 Phase 2 clinical trial for atherosclerosis in ACS patients

Resverlogix Corp. announced today that it has officially activated the first site for the ASSURE 1 trial and commenced enrollment of patients for dosing of RVX-208. ASSURE 1 is the second Resverlogix Phase 2 clinical trial, led by Cleveland Clinic. This trial will examine RVX-208, Resverlogix's oral small molecule therapy for the treatment of atherosclerosis, in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This preparatory acute coronary syndrome study will ensure that 50 percent of the enrolled patients receive the IVUS (intravascular ultrasound) assessment.

USPTO issues notice of allowance for Vanda Pharmaceuticals' Fanapt long-acting injectable formulation

Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a notice of allowance for its patent application of a microsphere, long-acting injectable formulation of its antipsychotic product, Fanapt™ (iloperidone). When issued, this U.S. patent will expire on October 30, 2022, and in addition, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent term adjustment of 300 days, leading to an effective expiration date of August 26, 2023.

For dialysis patients, high scores on a new fatigue rating scale predict an increased risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular events, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology.

Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA) are often called "mini strokes" for good reasons -- the short-term symptoms can mimic a stroke and up to 10 percent of first-time sufferers often experience full-blown strokes within as little as 90 days. Despite the well-known statistics, no post-TIA regimen exists to help prevent future strokes -- but this might be changing.

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents Eric Fingerhut joined Wright State University and Miami Valley Hospital officials in making the announcement.

Dr. Francesco Rubino, chief of gastrointestinal metabolic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, is now enrolling overweight and mildly obese patients -- those with a body mass index (BMI) of 28 to 35 -- in a study of gastric bypass surgery aimed at reversing Type 2 diabetes.

Scientists in Massachusetts are reporting new evidence that certain high blood pressure drugs may be useful in preventing and treating diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of vision loss in people with diabetes. The study, the largest to date on proteins in the retina, could lead to new ways to prevent or treat the sight-threatening disease, they say.

Harbor BioSciences, Inc. today announced that the company has received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent Office of patent claims covering the use of its lead product candidate Apoptone®. The patent claims cover the use of Apoptone to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy. Apoptone (HE3235) is a novel synthetic steroid analog of a dihydrotestosterone metabolite and has been found to stimulate cell death (apoptosis) in animal models of prostate and breast cancers.
