Supreme Court to hear case on vaccine side effects

The Associated Press: The Supreme Court will hear a case to decide whether drug makers can be sued by families who claim their children have suffered health problems from vaccines, going against a 1986 federal law that shields drug makers from most lawsuits and instead sets up a federal vaccine court to handle disputes.

Sartorius achieves operating earnings of 60.9M euros for 2009

Sartorius, a leading international laboratory and process equipment provider, increased its operating profit in 2009 despite the difficult macroeconomic climate and achieved operating earnings of 60.9 million euros, up from 56.8 million euros a year earlier. “As a result, we are among the companies that were able to close the 2009 year of crisis with a positive development of operating earnings,” commented CEO Dr. Joachim Kreuzburg on the company’s full-year results at the annual press conference in Goettingen, Germany.

FDA invites "Little Women" to present research on dangers of HPV vaccines

Called the "Little Women," six women who have spent the past three years listening, documenting and researching parental concerns about Gardasil have been invited to formally present their information to the FDA on March 12. FDA participants include the Office of Communication, Outreach and Development/Center of Biologics (CBER), Office of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and Office of Vaccines Research and Review.

NOVAVAX' Stage B 2009 H1N1 VLP pandemic influenza vaccine study in Mexico: Enrollment complete

Novavax, Inc. announced today that the enrollment of over 3,500 subjects in Mexico has been completed in Stage B of its pivotal 2009 H1N1 virus-like-particle (VLP) pandemic influenza vaccine study. With the 1,000 subjects already enrolled in Stage A of the trial, the enrollment in this pivotal trial is now complete with over 4,500 subjects.

Lancet World Report examines the challenges ahead for the GAVI Alliance, which after a decade of "steadily increasing financing" is now "facing a funding shortfall for the next decade that could hamper the roll-out of new vaccines." GAVI leaders attribute the funding challenges to the global economic crisis, which has kept government aid budgets from increasing, according to the Lancet.
